Richard Henry Hassler

July 29, 1944 — February 10, 2024

Hilger

Dick Hassler, 79, of Hilger and lifelong resident, joined the Heavenly Choir early Saturday, February 10, 2024, surrounded by his loved ones. Dick was born July 29, 1944, in Lewistown to his parents Henry and Olga (Borngraber) Hassler of Hilger. A few years later, he became a big brother to sister Elaine.

He attended school at Green Mountain and Lewistown, graduating from Fergus High in 1962. College was not an option, his father had health problems and Dick was needed on the farm. In 1966, he enlisted in the U.S. Army Reserves, retiring 8 years later. Dick was active and a member of the Central Montana Rifle Club, becoming secretary years later, a position he still held at the time of his passing. He was a life member of N.R.A. and M.R.P.A. He also worked with Jr. Rifle in Hilger and Lewistown.

He loved the lifestyle of ranching and farming. His animals were very important to him, enjoying all aspects of caring for them. He was planning and looking forward to haying season.

He was one of many who helped organize the Hilger Fire Department, becoming Chief a few years later, and retiring after 30 years. He enjoyed meetings and going to other areas to help and met so many new friends. In the past, he worked on sale days at the livestock auction and worked part-time for Hilger Meats.

He leaves behind his wife, Marlene Lehmann Hassler, sister, Elaine (Alan) Jordan, nephews, Jeff and Randy of Billings, and many cousins, loving pets Putz and Thomas, and many awesome friends.

Dick was laid to rest on February 13, 2024, at the Hilger Cemetery.

Memorial services will be on Saturday, March 9, 2024,  at 10:30 A.M. at the St. Paul Lutheran Church, 125 C Street, Lewistown.  Following the service, a memorial fun shoot will take place at the Civic Center in Lewistown.
