Veda Eleanor Barrick 88, formerly of Hobson and Moccasin, died early Saturday morning May 30th, 2020 in Lewistown at the Central Montana Health & Rehab Center. She was born April 29,1932 in Bozeman, MT at the Gallatin County Jail which is now the Gallatin County History Museum. Her parents, Robert J. and Pauline Mullica lived at the jail as Pauline's father Orin L. DeVore was the Gallatin County Sheriff. Robert was a Gallatin County deputy at the time and Pauline's mother Bess cooked for the prisoners.
Veda received her education in Bozeman. She attended elementary grades at Emerson School, which is now the Emerson Cultural Center. Veda graduated from Gallatin County High School in 1950. She then attended the University of Northwestern at St. Paul, MN for one year studying music. The Reverend Billy Graham was the president of the college at this time and also signed her Bible. In August of 1951 she married Keith Jongeward in Bozeman. They made their home in Bozeman and Salt Lake City until the marriage was annulled. Veda was staying with her cousin Ella when she met Darrell M. Barrick at the Green Ranch in Buffalo, MT. Ella was married to Darrell's older brother Raymond and Darrell was their hired hand at the time. Veda and Darrell were united in marriage on December 28, 1956 in Bozeman. They lived in Bozeman until 1958 when they moved to Moccasin to operate the family farm which they farmed until Darrell's retirement.
Veda was a member of the Hobson United Methodist Church and was their musician for over 30 years. An excellent baker she took treats to church every Sunday to share during coffee hour. She was also a delegate to the United Methodist Yellowstone Conference, and member of Benchland Community Club, Benchland Women's Club, PTA, Young Matrons and Eastern Star. Veda drove school bus for many years and was the newspaper correspondent for the Lewistown and Stanford papers, writing the Moccasin and Benchland Community news.
She enjoyed cooking, baking, sewing, knitting, crochet, and was an avid reader. She always read to her children and grandchildren. Cooking, baking, caring for and spending time with her family was most important. Veda was an excellent hostess and fed everyone. She and Darrell also took in many FFA (Future Farmers of America) foreign exchange farm interns from a variety of countries over the years and treated them as members of the family.
Veda is survived by one son Dean (Connie) of Billings, MT; two daughters Marianne (Greg) Frank of Great Falls, MT; and Paula Kohrt of Hobson, MT; seven grandchildren, three great grandchildren, one brother-in-law Leo (Marilyn) Barrick and sister-in-law Shirley Barrick all of Lewistown and several nieces and nephews and cousins. She was preceded in death by her husband in 2012, oldest son Brian in 1993 and her parents.
Memorial Graveside Services for Veda E. Barrick will be Friday, June 19, 2020 at 1:00 p.m. at Philbrook Cemetery west of Hobson. Cremation has taken place with the Cloyd Funeral Home assisting the family. A lunch reception will be held in the outdoor pavilion at Tall Boys in Hobson following the services.
Friends are asked to make memorials to the Shodair Children's Hospital, Intermountain Deaconess Children's Home, Hobson United Methodist Church or the charity of their choice. They may be left with the Cloyd Funeral Home. Condolences for the family may be posted online at www.cloydfuneralhome.com.
